Volunteer Community Befrienders – Gateshead Community Treatment Teams (East and West)

The teams provide a specialist service for men and women aged between 18 and 65 years who experience severe complex mental health difficulties and require a period of assessment and treatment.

The aim of the service is to aid recovery from mental ill health and to assist people in returning to manageable levels of activity and independence in the local community.

The team is made up of professionals including doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, psychologists, support workers, peer supporters and administrative staff.

The Befriending Scheme aims to provide social and emotional support, on a one-to-one basis for people living in the community, to those who may be socially isolated due to ill health or loneliness, particularly in the wake of Covid-19.

Befriending offers a supportive, reliable, non-judgemental, social relationship that may provide people with:

  • Increased independence, self-esteem, and self-confidence.
  • Increased motivation through the exploration of personal interests.
  • The opportunity to engage in positive social interaction.
  • An opportunity to access a range of social activities in the local community (visiting local places of interest, going for coffee and chat).

By giving your time, you can make a huge contribution, whilst offering hope in people’s recovery journey and being able to see the real difference you are making to their lives.

We offer Volunteer Induction Training, Befriending Training, Lone Worker Training and regular support during your time with us.  Agreed out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed too.
