Dr Charlotte Allan

I graduated from the University of Leeds in 2006. I worked in Leeds as a Foundation Doctor on an Academic Foundation Programme in Psychiatry, and moved to Oxford in 2008 for post-graduate training in psychiatry on a combined clinical and academic training path. I was attracted to work in Newcastle by its reputation for clinical services for older people, track record in dementia research, and the opportunity to live near a cultural centre and some very beautiful countryside. I have been a consultant at NTW since 2016.

Current roles

I am the Lead Consultant for Newcastle Memory Assessment and Management Service. We are a busy, multi-disciplinary team committed to providing a high-quality service for patients and their families.

I am the Tyne Base Unit Lead for Mental Health for Newcastle University/NTW and co-ordinate psychiatry teaching for third and fifth-year medical students in Newcastle and Gateshead. I am accredited as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA, 2011) and am always keen to encourage students and junior doctors interested in pursuing careers in old age psychiatry, particularly in the North-East. I am a post-graduate trainer for Higher Trainees and Foundation Doctors.

I am an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Newcastle University and actively support the NTW strategy to increase patient access to research. I have roles in commercial and non-commercial clinical trials in Dementia, funded by North-East and North-Cumbria Clinical Research Network and Newcastle University’s BRC Dementia Unit.

I am the Academic Consultant Advisor for the Royal College of Psychiatrists Old Age Faculty Specialty Advisory Committee, and a clinical advisor to the Care Quality Commission.
