What is Adult Forensic Services at St Nicholas’ Hospital?
Adult Forensic Services at St Nicholas’ Hospital is located in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne. It consists of the Bamburgh Clinic (medium secure service). Adult Forensic Services provides assessment and treatment for mental illness or personality disorders, for people who may have come into conflict with the law.
There are 3 wards in the Bamburgh Clinic:
• Aidan
• Cuthbert
• Oswin -
What is Aidan Ward?
Aidan Ward is the acute admissions ward in the Bamburgh Clinic.

Who is it for?
Aidan Ward provides assessment and treatment for mental health problems within a secure setting. There are 10 beds for men who may have come into conflict with the law, and/or are thought to be a risk to others or themselves. We take patients who are from the North of England, usually from prisons/courts, or other mental health wards or as a step down from the High Secure Hospitals.

Why do I need to be here?
Members of the care team will work with you to find the treatment that is right for you. Staff are available to support you and help keep you safe during your time on Aidan Ward.

Arriving on Aidan
When you arrive you will be welcomed by a member of the care team. They will explain what will happen during your stay and give you information. You will have time to settle in and have a look around your environment.

How long will I be here?
The length of stay depends upon your personal needs. The care team will involve you fully in discussion about this.

What sort of things can I do at Aidan?
You will get your own bedroom with en-suite facilities on the ward. We have communal areas with games consoles, TVs and quiet rooms, and an internal courtyard with benches and a gazebo.
We will ask you to spend time outside of your bedroom during the day from Monday to Friday. We have a therapy area where formal and informal activities take place and you will be encouraged to plan these weekly. An activity worker also works as part of our team.

Activities you can be involved with
Staff on the ward will help you to get involved in activities that will help you gain life skills and keep you busy.
We have a variety of facilities and activities to do on the Bamburgh Clinic, including a large sports barn, two well equipped gyms and areas for activities such as cooking, computers, arts and music. We also have a multi-faith room you can use for prayer and reflection.
The Gateway Recovery College for secure services provides a range of courses you can enrol in, should you and your clinical team feel they would be helpful in your recovery. This provides a safe place to learn and develop.
We also use the ‘My Shared Pathway’ model and the Recovery Star tool to help provide you with meaningful goals and positive outcomes during your time here.
