Cuthbert Annexe – Patient and carer information leaflet

This leaflet provides you with information that you will find useful during your stay. If you are not sure about anything in this leaflet please ask a member of staff.

Adult Secure Services at St Nicholas’ Hospital is located in Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne. It consists of the Bamburgh Clinic (medium secure service) and Tyne Mental Health (low secure service) based at Northgate Hospital. Adult Secure Services provides assessment and treatment for mental illness or personality disorders, for people who may have come into contact with the law.

There are four wards in the Bamburgh Clinic:
• Aidan
• Cuthbert
• Cuthbert Annexe
• Oswin

Cuthbert Annexe is a step-down ward in the Bamburgh Clinic for individuals who are preparing to transfer from a medium secure unit.

Cuthbert Annexe continues to provide recovery focused rehabilitation for people with mental health problems within a secure care setting. There are five beds for men progressing through their recovery journey.

Your care team have decided it is the best place for you as your progress in your recovery. Staff on Cuthbert Annexe will continue to support you with your plan of care through your transition.

You will be contacted prior to your arrival by the care team and introduced to staff. They will explain what will happen during your stay and give you information. When you arrive you will be welcomed by a member of the care team. You will have time to settle in and have a look around your environment.

The length of stay depends upon your personal needs and your planned pathway. The care team will involve you fully in discussion about this.

You will get your own bedroom with en-suite facilities. We have communal areas with games consoles, TV and an internal courtyard. Within the Annex individuals will have internet access and mobile phone use following a risk assessment this will be discussed with your multi-disciplinary team (MDT).

We have a therapy area where formal and informal activities take place and you will be encouraged to engage in the planning of these weekly, for the periods of time you are on the ward as we encourage the engagement with the community placement identified in your pathway. An activity worker also works as part of our team.

Staff on the ward will help you to get involved in activities that will help you to maintain on the life skills you have enhanced through your pathway. We have a variety of facilities and things to do on the Barnburgh Clinic, including a large sports barn, two well equipped gyms and areas for activities such as cooking, computers, arts and music. We also have a multi-faith room you can use for prayer and reflection.

The Gateway Recovery College for secure services provides a range of courses you can enrol in, should you and your clinical team feel they would be helpful in your recovery. This provides a safe place to learn and develop.

We also use the ‘My Shared Pathway’ model and the Recovery Star tool to help provide you with meaningful goals and positive outcomes during your time here.

Staff can arrange an interpreter if you need one.
