Treatment Centre, St Georges Park – Patient Information Leaflet

This leaflet provides you with information that you will find useful whilst attending the Physical Treatment Centre. If you are not sure about anything in this leaflet please ask a member of staff

The Treatment Centre is based on the ground floor of the East Wing corridor, St Georges Park, Morpeth, Northumberland.

The services provided are:
• Electrocardiograph (ECG) – A monitoring test on your heart that involves the placement of some stickers and leads on the chest area, a reading is taken of the electrical activity in your heart.
• Smoking Cessation – If you require help or support to give up smoking. This service is provided by trained intermediate advisors who may refer on to specialist advisors and community services on discharge.
• Clozapine Monitoring Clinic – Blood sampling at a frequency determined by Clozapine Monitoring Service and physical health monitoring.
• Phlebotomy -Taking of blood samples as requested by your Doctor.
• Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) – Is a well established treatment, used for a smaller number of more serious conditions. It involves a small amount of electricity being passed across the brain for usually 0.2-0.8 seconds. ECT is only given under general anaesthetic and with a drug to relax the body’s muscles. This produces an artificial epileptic fit that affects the entire brain, including the parts which control thinking, mood, appetite and sleep.
• Podiatry – Care of the feet.

The services provided by the Treatment Centre support your overall treatment plans.

When you arrive in the department you will meet one of four qualified mental health nurses, who work within the department consisting of a Manager and three Staff Nurses. They will explain what will happen during the time you may be in receipt of our services.

• Please note that referral to any of our clinics needs to be made through your key worker on the ward or your ward doctor.
• The centre staff liaises closely with doctors and nurses on the wards as well as pharmacy staff and those you may have contact with in the community.
• The Treatment Centre provides services for in-patients and some out-patients.
• Staff at the Treatment Centre will be happy to provide information to you and/or your carer about any treatment or therapy that may be recommended for you.
• Please ask your named nurse or doctor about this and one of our staff could visit you on the ward, or a visit to our department could be arranged, as appropriate.

People usually attend appointments in the Treatment Centre for approximately 15-30 minutes depending on which service you are receiving.

Staff can arrange an interpreter if you need one.
